Thrown Into The Wild Among Coyotes Because He Had Fleas, A Little Cat Finally Finds Safety

Sharon Carter, who lives at a horse and small farm animal sanctuary in Winchester, California, shares a heartbreaking story from July 2013. That day, as the shelter director was leaving the facility, she witnessed a shocking scene. A truck stopped near a nearby vacant lot, and a woman got out. Without hesitation, she opened the passenger door and threw something into the bushes before speeding off.

Puzzled and concerned, the director approached to investigate. To her surprise, she discovered a small, frightened kitten. Unable to catch it, she immediately called Sharon for help.

Upon arrival, Sharon saw that the cat had crossed the road and then retraced her steps. After a few minutes of searching, they found her hiding under the director's truck, taking refuge in the engine compartment. The animal was panicked, scratching in fear, and covered in dirt, but they managed to get her out. Fortunately, a towel in the truck allowed them to gently wrap her before bringing her to the "catio," the shelter's dedicated cat enclosure.

It took about a week for the little cat to calm down and begin to trust. She quickly revealed herself to be incredibly gentle and affectionate.

A few days later, Sharon and the team discovered the identity of the woman who had abandoned her: the housekeeper at a ranch not far from the shelter. When confronted about her actions, she initially denied doing it, but eventually admitted that she had gotten rid of the cat... because it had fleas. Although they reported its license plate number to the police, no action was taken, and the truck never returned.

Once treated for fleas and thoroughly brushed, the cat revealed her true nature: she wasn't a kitten, but a very small adult cat. The shelter team affectionately named her Tosser, a nod to the fact that she had been "discarded." Today, Tosser is fully integrated into the shelter and confidently reigns over her new domain, surrounded by love and security.

A poignant lesson in animal resilience... and the importance of never turning your back on a vulnerable being.
